Is cosmetic surgery right for you?

If you’ve often looked in the mirror and craved the return of your flat, pre-childbearing tummy; yearned for larger breasts; or wished the excess skin left behind after you lost weight was gone, then cosmetic plastic surgery may be a practical solution for you. Unlike expensive creams and youth potions that come with unrealistic assurances, the results from plastic surgery are immediate and dramatic. Whether it’s to make you look younger, to reshape your body to look better or to complete your weight loss transformation by removing excess skin, many people are choosing cosmetic plastic surgery to give them the body and the life they want. Cosmetic plastic surgery is not just about how you look outside but how you feel inside. It can raise your confidence, self-esteem, and provide a renewed sense of beauty and energy.

Before you decide if cosmetic plastic surgery is right for you, you’ll need a surgeon you trust completely. You must feel comfortable in their care so you can ask questions and discuss your concerns. Your plastic surgeon must also have healthy values and treat you as a unique individual, giving you personalized attention and consideration. An excellent plastic surgeon will educate you on your options so you can make an informed decision on what is best for your body and your lifestyle.

“Patients should seek out someone who has trained extensively as a plastic surgeon in a program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada,” stresses Dr. Allan Eckhaus, Plastic Surgeon and owner of Eckhaus Plastic Surgery in Ajax.

Passionate about being one of the best surgeons in his field, Dr. Eckhaus helps patients look and feel their very best. After graduating from the University of Toronto Medical School, he completed his plastic surgery residency at U of T and then finished his post-graduate fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia with subspecialty training in cosmetic plastic surgery, microvascular breast reconstruction, and post-bariatric body contouring surgery. He developed his skills under the expert guidance of internationally renowned plastic surgeons.

Today, Dr. Allan Eckhaus puts his extensive training and experience to work helping patients discover the body they have always wanted. He spends a considerable portion of his practice on popular procedures like tummy tucks, breast surgery (both cosmetic and reconstructive), body lifts, facial cosmetic surgery, and liposuction. He is also very busy with body contouring surgery and non-surgical techniques such as dermal fillers, Botox and fat grafting.

“When a patient wishes to improve or enhance a particular area of their body, I can educate them on their options and, with my guidance we can decide whether they are a good candidate for cosmetic plastic surgery, and which procedure would be right for them,” says Dr. Eckhaus.

“The results are instantaneous,” explains Dr. Eckhaus. “It’s really gratifying to see how excited a patient is with the quick results of plastic surgery.

Know your options

“Most patients don’t know the options that are available to them,” explains Dr. Eckhaus. “If someone comes to me saying they are uncomfortable with their tummy area after having three children, they may think that liposuction is the only thing that would help when, in fact, they may be better suited for a tummy tuck or a body lift.”

The key to successful cosmetic surgery is discovering what it right is for each individual patient. “I ask each patient what type of work they do and what their family life is like,” says Dr. Eckhaus. “It helps me identify which procedure will give the patient the desired outcome.”

What to expect

Patients can be referred by their family physician or call the office directly to schedule an appointment without a referral. “They often will come to me with one or two specific areas that are bothersome,” explains Dr. Eckhaus. “Consultations are half an hour, so there is lots of time to go into detail and answer all of their questions.”

“I review their complete medical history and do a focused physical exam,” says Dr. Eckhaus. “Then, we sit and discuss all of the options, weighing the pros and cons of each. I will often show the patient pre- and post-operative photographs of the procedure so they understand the process, the recovery and the typical expected outcome.”

By the end of the consultation, Dr. Eckhaus has answered almost all of your questions. “After I ask if they have any more questions, I will introduce them to the patient care coordinator who walks them through the fees associated with their procedure,” says Dr. Eckhaus.

Patients can choose to have their procedures done in the Ajax Pickering hospital or at a private clinic. “Most procedures are done in an outpatient setting,” explains Dr. Eckhaus. “Some patients prefer to be in the hospital where all the services and specialists are located, while others prefer the private clinic setting for added discretion.”

After a second consultation to review details of the procedure, answer remaining questions and take pre-operative photographs, the procedure is booked.

“Cosmetic patients are often the happiest patients. When someone is uncomfortable with their body, their self-esteem and confidence suffer. It’s a legitimate concern,” explains. Dr. Eckhaus. “Cosmetic plastic surgery makes it possible to improve the way you look and restore your confidence and energy. When patients see the results, they are thrilled.”
