My memories of the Château Laurier go back to when I lived in Ottawa in my early twenties. As it does now, located next to the Parliament Buildings, the Chateau dominated the downtown landscape, looking as though it just popped out of a fairy tale. I loved stepping inside the elegant lobby of this historic building wondering what tales the walls could tell. Many years have passed since then, and as the grand old lady gets ready to celebrate her 100th birthday I had the chance to spend a weekend in her company getting to know her better....
Mega-ships on a sea cruise are not too dissimilar to spa resorts in a desert oasis. Here, the three Rs of well-being may be experienced: relaxation, revitalization and romance. This constitutes the trifecta of the great getaway. Averaging 300 days of sunshine annually, we launched an Arizona escape to sample the attributes of some established upscale spa resorts....

There was lots of “Are we there yet?”, “I’m hungry”, and “I have to go to the bathroom” as we drove through Upstate New York to the Adirondack Mountains. We stayed stopped at greasy spoons and stayed in “budget-friendly” motels. My brother and I amused ourselves chasing each other over rocks in roadside streams. I had the chance to visit the area again this summer for a long weekend with my husband Walter. This time we were planning a more luxurious getaway. ...
One does not have to be a podiatrist or cobbler or even possess a foot fetish to appreciate Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum. I decided to put my proverbial best foot forward and stepped in to see the superb selection of shoes sequestered there....
“Don’t go out in daylight,” Will Smith advised a group of attentive aliens in Men in Black II, “except in the East Village. That will be okay.” Then I watched Rent, the smash rock opera, based on La Boheme, about artists being evicted from their squats in derelict buildings in the late 1980s. I wondered, did I really want to spend time there during a brief visit to New York?...
