Trailblazers

WITH THE publication of this, East of the City’s 10th anniversary issue, it’s safe to say the magazine knows a thing or 10 about what it takes to keep its readership engaged month after month, year after year. Regional stories of the unique people, places and things that enrich our daily lives have been the foundation on which East has built its success. For me, it’s always been the people profiles. And so it goes that I had the privilege of interviewing the inaugural group of five of our region’s most beloved trailblazers for this special edition. And in each the following five editions you will meet five additional innovators who call our region home.

Ottawa’s Castle turns a Century

My memories of the Château Laurier go back to when I lived in Ottawa in my early twenties. As it does now, located next to the Parliament Buildings, the Chateau dominated the downtown landscape, looking as though it just popped out of a fairy tale. I loved stepping inside the elegant lobby of this historic building wondering what tales the walls could tell. Many years have passed since then, and as the grand old lady gets ready to celebrate her 100th birthday I had the chance to spend a weekend in her company getting to know her better....

Adorn's Flair and Filigree

Lake Placid Laid-Back Luxury

I last visited Lake Placid when I was 11 years old on a road trip with my parents and my youngest brother. There was lots of “Are we there yet?”, “I’m hungry”, and “I have to go to the bathroom” as we drove through Upstate New York to the Adirondack Mountains. We stayed stopped at greasy spoons and stayed in “budget-friendly” motels. My brother and I amused ourselves chasing each other over rocks in roadside streams. I had the chance to visit the area again this summer for a long weekend with my husband Walter. This time we were planning a more luxurious getaway. ...
