To quote one of the most infamous lines in the world, “It was the best of times and it was the worst of times”. The decade in which East of the City was born has seen many changes that in so many ways resemble the revolution that the Dickens novel describes.
It only took me 10 years to convince East of the City editors that high end chain restaurants have come a long way. That some are doing it right. And that they deserve to be included in the pages of this magazine....
To say chef Bernard Alberigo of Whitby’s famed Nice Bistro serves at the pleasure of his customers would be an understatement. A case in point was my tête-à-tête with him back-of-house one bone-chilling Monday — his day off, the restaurant dark— to talk duck confit and the Slow Food Movement, two subjects near and dear to my little foodie heart....
Foodies east of the city have a lot to be thankful for. Durham Region is chock full of some of the most sought-after chefs in the casual fine dining realm. Tethered to an abundance of fertile farmlands worked tirelessly by seasoned multi-generational farm families, it’s no wonder Toronto foodies are green with envy and why its best cuisiniers now call Durham home....
With many producers making great fruit filled wine for light drinking as well as wine that is for more serious flair — there is no doubt these vintages are aimed at the warm season ahead....
Within the walls of Casa Verde nurturing abounds. The fact that the restaurant is housed in what was the 1920s private residence and hospital of local midwife, Rachel Irish, is not lost on me. It’s this good karma that segues seamlessly to the Nonna-like gentle care and attention Casa Verde confers on its clientele... at the table and on the plate....

The Chan sisters are no strangers to the restaurant trade. Two of them own thriving restaurants in Toronto, Ontario, while sibling, Clarisse May, co-owns and operates not one, not two, but three locations of Azian Cuisine, two of which are firmly rooted in Durham Region while the third wows patrons in the City of Vaughan. Originally from Hong Kong, Chan immigrated to Canada almost four decades ago to further her and her daughter’s studies. In Chan’s other life she worked for an airline. Suffice to say this one-woman dynamo knows just about everything there is to know about customer service and hospitality. ...
