Traditionally, Irish

It only took me 10 years to convince East of the City editors that high end chain restaurants have come a long way. That some are doing it right. And that they deserve to be included in the pages of this magazine.

Low & Slow with Chef Bernard

To say chef Bernard Alberigo of Whitby’s famed Nice Bistro serves at the pleasure of his customers would be an understatement. A case in point was my tête-à-tête with him back-of-house one bone-chilling Monday — his day off, the restaurant dark— to talk duck confit and the Slow Food Movement, two subjects near and dear to my little foodie heart....

Savour the Season

Foodies east of the city have a lot to be thankful for. Durham Region is chock full of some of the most sought-after chefs in the casual fine dining realm. Tethered to an abundance of fertile farmlands worked tirelessly by seasoned multi-generational farm families, it’s no wonder Toronto foodies are green with envy and why its best cuisiniers now call Durham home....

At Home at Casa Verde

Within the walls of Casa Verde nurturing abounds. The fact that the restaurant is housed in what was the 1920s private residence and hospital of local midwife, Rachel Irish, is not lost on me. It’s this good karma that segues seamlessly to the Nonna-like gentle care and attention Casa Verde confers on its clientele... at the table and on the plate....

aZian cuisine- a plate full of happiness

The Chan sisters are no strangers to the restaurant trade. Two of them own thriving restaurants in Toronto, Ontario, while sibling, Clarisse May, co-owns and operates not one, not two, but three locations of Azian Cuisine, two of which are firmly rooted in Durham Region while the third wows patrons in the City of Vaughan. Originally from Hong Kong, Chan immigrated to Canada almost four decades ago to further her and her daughter’s studies. In Chan’s other life she worked for an airline. Suffice to say this one-woman dynamo knows just about everything there is to know about customer service and hospitality. ...

Sumptuous sandwiches

The selection process was based not only on each sandwich’s popularity, depth of flavour, and creative use of ingredients, but also on its provenance. What of the chefs’ personal history and culinary passion found its way into their creation? Enjoy these five recipes, and you too will savour the path to discovery. ...

Coming home to the Brock House

Look up the word “successful” in the dictionary and you’ll find restaurateur Chris Neshevich’s head shot. Here’s a guy that does nothing by half measures. And the newest venture in his restaurant empire, the jaw-dropping beautiful casual fine dining Brock House, is a case in point....

Going local at Harp & Wylie's

I ask Brent Harper and Scott Wylie, co-owners (along with significant others Lauren and Corinna) of Port Perry, Ontario hot spot Harp & Wylie’s Canadian Grill House, what separates them from other casual fine dining restaurants in the region. Scott smiles knowingly at Brent and says, “Well, our customers really like our rib and chicken wing wraps.”...
