Tea lovers know there is more to making a cup of tea than squeezing a tea bag unceremoniously against the walls of a mug. There is the proper preparation of steeping. There is the fragrance, subtle, gentle and soothing, sensed only as the cup is lifted to your lips and the fragrant steam warms your cheeks....[May 2009] Good enough to eat
Even in my early years of gardening, my mantra was to create a garden that was different than everyone else’s. Back then “foundation” plantings, as they were called, were the de rigueur. Typically, rows and rows of houses in suburbia all had large front lawns dotted with a few shrubs, maybe a tree or two and a couple of junipers on either side of the front door. And, of course there were the petunias, marigolds and impatiens to provide a bit of colour. Every front yard looked the same. I couldn’t stand it. I thought it boring and uninteresting then and I still do. I was much more attracted to gardens with a diverse and colourful palette of plants, and one that included some things you could eat....
