2009 Garden Trends

As the global economy spirals downward cocooning is destined to be even more prevalent now than in the last decade, spurring a renewed interest in gardening pursuits. According to Susan McCoy, trend spotter and president of the Garden Media Group, “It’s a resurgence of gardening for the greater good, for the earth and our wallets. The most exciting movement seems to be that gardening is popular again, particularly among younger homeowners,” she says. Let’s take a look at what other trends are in store for 2009. ...

Shining the light on natural beauty

The village of Brooklin has all the charm of small-town Ontario but with amenities to rival that of Toronto’s GTA. Orchid Salon & Medi-Spa, is a case in point. Caring is the word that serves me best as I stroll along the meandering walkway to the spa’s front door....

Nice Bistro — Whitby's culinary gem

A bone-chilling wind off Lake Ontario sweeps me into the welcoming glow of Nice Bistro in the heart of Whitby’s famed Four Corners. I’m greeted warmly by Manon Alberigo, front-of-house manager, chef’s wife, and mother to Phillipe and Olivier, the couple’s teenage sons. In her spare time, Manon is also the bistro’s amazing patissier. This petite whirlwind of hospitality seats me, cashes out a multi-generational family of long-timers, clears and sets three tables, then hops on a chair to change the chalkboard’s seasonally-charged menu from lunch’s fare to what’s simmering on Chef Bernard’s burners for tonight’s dinner crowd. Her agility is dazzling....

New Zealand

I fell in love with New Zealand. So far away and seemingly so isolated, it is a country whose landscape is beautiful beyond belief. The plants the animals, they are all different and most are found nowhere else on earth. But, the people, well, surprisingly they were a lot like Canadians. In fact, many New Zealanders told me that visitors often tell them just that. I’d like to think so. I found the people warm and friendly, respectful and proud of their country, and eager to show off what nature has blessed them with. Sounds a lot like us doesn’t it?...

Panama- More than just a canal

In 1903, a treaty between the newly independent Panama and the United States permitted the U.S. to undertake the construction of an inter-oceanic ship canal across the Isthmus of Panama. “Undertaking” was the operative word since 400 lives were lost for every mile of the canal constructed; more by disease than accidents. President Theodore Roosevelt stated during his initial Congressional address: “No single great material work which remains to be undertaken on this continent is of such consequence to the American people as the Panama Canal”....

Dodge Avenger makes a great first impression

The Dodge Avenger has a powerful and aggressive sounding name. In that sense, it captures immediate attention over its segment competitors whose names are tame by comparison. The moniker Avenger certainly congers more thrilling images than Aura, Accord, Camry, Malibu, Maxima or Sonata, to name a few....
